Rug Sizing 101: Finding the Perfect Fit for Your Space

Updated: Mar 13

Rugs have a way of making a space feel complete, adding warmth, texture, and just the right amount of coziness. But getting the rug sizing right? That’s where things can go wrong. Too small, and the room can feel unbalanced. Too big, and it can overwhelm the space. So, how do you nail the perfect rug size?

Here’s a quick guide to help you get it right.

Living Room

Your rug should anchor your seating arrangement—not necessarily fill the whole room.

  • Place at least the front two legs of your sofa and armchairs on the rug. If you have a large space, aim for all legs on the rug.

  • Leave at least a 30cm border between your rug and the walls for a balanced look.

Bedroom Rug Sizing

There are two ways to style a rug in the bedroom, depending on the look you’re going for:

  • Position a smaller rug under the bottom half of the bed OR place a larger rug under the entire bed (including bedside tables).

  • Make sure the rug extends at least 45cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed for a soft, cozy step in the morning.

  • Keep a 30cm border between the rug and walls.

Dining Room

The golden rule? Your rug should be big enough to cover both the table and chairs—even when they’re pulled out.

  • Add 45-60cm to each side of your table when choosing a rug size.(Example: For a 180cm x 90cm table, your rug should be around 270-300cm x 180-210cm.)

  • Match the rug shape to the dining table for a cohesive look!

Finding the perfect rug size comes down to function, proportions, and shape—but once you get it right, it makes all the difference.

Happy designing,
