Rugs can add warmth, texture, and colour to your home, but choosing the right size can be a challenge. A rug that is too small can make a room look unbalanced, while a rug that is too large can overwhelm the space. So, how do you choose the perfect rug size for your home? Here are some tips to help you get started.
Living room:
A rug should anchor your seating arrangement; it doesn’t necessarily have to fill the whole room.
Place at least the front two legs of your sofa and main chairs on the rug. In a large living room you would ideally want all legs on the rug.
Leave at least a 30 cm border between your rug and the walls.
Bedrooms:
You can place a small rug under the bottom half of the bed, or you can place all 4 legs and bedsides on the rug.
Make sure the rug extends at least 45 cm beyond the sides and foot of your bed.
Leave at least a 30 cm border between your rug and the walls.
Dining Room:
The rug should be large enough to cover the table AND chairs, even when they are pulled out.
A good rule of thumb is to add 45-60cm to all all sides of your dining table to determine the size of your rug. So if the table is 180cm x 90cm, the rug should be Length= 270-300cm x Width = 180-210cm.
Tip: match the rug shape to the shape of the dining table!
Choosing the right rug size for your home requires careful consideration of the function of the room, measurements of the space, and the shape of the rug. But by following these tips and guidelines, you can find the perfect rug size for any room.
